Your health truly is your wealth.

You only really understand this when you are faced with restrictions and set backs such as injuries or the inability to exercise.

It is only then that you really understand that we all take advantage of certain aspects of living far to easily.

Simple aspects such as walking, running, picking up things, having flexibility, endurance, respiratory health and so on. These are all aspects of living that many may not have or truly struggle with.

Take a high level athlete that trains every day. They enjoy a mental release from exercise, training is their therapy. Put that athlete in the position of a hospital bed with a broken arm or leg and a 6-8 week recovery time before they can do anything again. A few things will happen –

Depression will hit.

It will begin to drive you insane.

And you will realise how lucky you actually were.

There’s no better means of being handed a reality check than when you cannot do something that you love to do. Hearing doctors or others tell you that you need to rest, that things can’t be the same as they were before or that you will have to change your lifestyle can be the most devastating thing you can be given.

It leaves you with a few of options –

Give up, give in or give it all you’ve got.

If you really want to get back to full health, you will do everything you possibly can to get there. You won’t stand for people telling you it’s not going to happen.

But you will realise how important it is to stay safe and maintain your health. That is a definite. And you will do everything you an possibly do afterwards to stay healthy and make sure you don’t end up in that predicament again.

We cannot essentially buy health, we need to maintain it. Prehab is always a better option than rehab and the best way to stay out of the red is by making sure you cover all boxes.

Nutrition

Exercise

Rest/Recovery

Mental Health

If one goes then the rest suffer. If your mind isn’t right during training, you’ll end up injured. If you aren’t resting enough after working out, you’ll end up injured. If your nutrition isn’t right, you’ll end up malnourished and will never fully recover from the stress you put your body through.

Those 4 points, I cannot stress enough. Those are the key 4 points to overall health. Not just health towards performance, but overall health.

Next time you think of taking a silly risk,  just remember what it feels like to be injured.
